The Thesis Sentence

What makes a good thesis sentence?

  • It makes a claim or provides an opinion about a topic.
  • It’s specific about the topic of the essay.
  • It’s clear and direct.
  • It leads the way for discussion of the topic.
  • It expresses only one main point.

After a thesis sentence states the claim or opinion (the topic), it often lists the areas of focus, or predictors (descriptions that predict the topics of the essay’s body paragraphs).

A.  Which of the following examples would be good thesis sentences? Which ones would not? Why or why not?

B.    Thesis sentence writing practice: complete the sentences.
